Transeuropa: de Cabo Norte a Tarifa

Synopsis

In the modern western society in which we live we are strongly conditioned by timetables, routines and the security provided by a life in which everything is more or less calculated and sudden scares are the exception. However, there are always people who do not resign themselves to living in such a predictable way and bring out the human need to overcome difficulties and accept challenges. Our adventure, our journey, fully responds to that need to overcome limits, know other environments and live other experiences. We are not the only ones, that’s true, but usually the challenge entails reaching a summit or overcoming a very specific difficulty in a short period of time. In our case, the difficulty of our adventure had an added element to the struggle to overcome a extreme situation; time. Maintaining a maximum effort for 144 days is a challenge which few human beings have achieved. Travelling 6,491 kilometres from North Cape, in Norway, to Tarifa, in Cadiz, starting at the harshest period of winter and using three different means of transport – skis, canoes and bikes – puts the capacity of the most experienced adventurer to the test. They were five months struggling against the weather, five months of continuous physical efforts, of adapting the body to different equipment and, last but not least, the life experience of four people living together who started off by sharing a passion and ended up becoming close friends. This long and difficult adventure has made it possible for us to get to know different countries, landscapes, customs and lifestyles, but above all it has taught us that the human being is able, on his own, to adapt to the most adverse conditions and overcome them with just their will to move forward.
