THE 7TH DONOSTIA-SAN SEBASTIÁN FILM AND HUMAN RIGHTS FESTIVAL WILL BE ROUNDED OFF ON 30TH APRIL WITH THE PREMIÈRE OF THE DOCUMENTARY FILM CHECKPOINT ROCK

The film, directed by Fermín Muguruza and Javier Corcuera, reflects the situation in Palestine through music and the country's artists.

The 7th Donostia-San Sebastián Film and Human Rights Festival (23-30 April) will be rounded off on 30th April with the first showing of the documentary film Checkpoint Rock - Songs from Palestine.  Directed by Fermín Muguruza and Javier Corcuera, the film is produced jointly by a Basque production company, K 2000, and a Galician one, Filmanova, with backup by Basque television company ETB, and a grant from the Basque Government and the Cinematography and Audio-Visual Arts Institute.

The world première will be held on 30th April, at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, at 19:30 hours. Following the showing of the film, at 22:30 hours, a concert will be given in Gasteszena Hall, Egia Cultural Centre, by some of the musicians who appear in the documentary.

Checkpoint Rock brings us the sounds of Palestinian music played by the country's artists. Filmed entirely on location in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank, it takes us on a journey through a place which the whole World has its eyes turned on but nevertheless has scant knowledge about. What music gives a voice and melody to this place? Who are its most representative musicians and what is life like for them? What do they think about the way fate has touched their lives and how do they brave it with the help of their lyrics and melodies?

From the advertising hoardings and neon lights of Tel Aviv to the poverty and despair of the occupied territories of the West Bank and the great concentration camp that is the Gaza Strip today, Checkpoint Rock shares with very different musicians, from village to village and town to town, from checkpoint to checkpoint, a tour of discovery on which Fermín Muguruza points his movie camera at everything that catches the attention of his astute eyes.

With commentary by a member of the rap group DAM, the documentary introduces us to performers of traditional music, to young hip hop singers, and to rock groups who are trying to carry on with their jobs in spite of all the difficulties they are facing.

Following the showing of the documentary, Fermín Muguruza, accompanied by his usual musicians (Jon Elizalde on the trombone, Sorkun on vocals and Zigor Lampre as DJ) and several Palestinian musicians will give a concert in which they will bring the sounds of Palestine to the people of Euskadi.

The Palestinian musicians participating will be: Amal Murkus, singer of traditional music; Naseem Dakwer, player of the Arabian lute and violin; Habib Aldeek, ood (lute) teacher at the University of Nablus; Suhell Nafar, a singer in Palestine's first group performing rap in Arabic, DAM; Safaa Arapiyat, the first female Palestinian rapper; Kher Fauzi, poet, singer and percussionist with the traditional musical group Walla’at; and Ayman, rap singer.

Following its première in Donostia, in early May Checkpoint Rock will travel to the Saharan International Film Festival; it will also be at Documenta Madrid on 8th May.

K 2000 produces a documentary about Palestine.

The K 2000 team has travelled around the territory of the West Bank; it went up to the Gaza border during the Israeli air strikes; and it's interviewed Hamas leaders in Syria. Over 50 hours of pictures and interviews that reflect the situation the Palestinians live in on their own territory and which has been featured on the Pásalo (Pass it On) programme which K 2000 produces for Basque TV.

The documentary analyzes the acts approved by the Israeli State in the name of its citizens' security and the direct social, economic and political consequences that these have on the Palestinian people.

The wall which Israel began building in 2002, and which is internationally recognized as an illegal work, rises like a great mural that shouts a shout of freedom to the World. Once completed, there will be 700 kilometres of concrete wall and metal fencing that will isolate Israel from Palestinian territories in defence of the Israelis' security.

In Bethlehem we went through one of the hundreds of military checkpoints situated throughout the West Bank. On foot, under the surveillance cameras, we went through passport control, turnstiles and X-ray.  These checks have a great effect on the economy (loss of work), education (many young people can't get to their classes and drop out of studying), and health (women have their babies in ambulances while waiting to go through the checkpoint).

In the city of Hebron, Israeli soldiers stationed at one of these checkpoints point their weapons at us. Within Hebron there are 17 checkpoints in the hands of the Israeli army, in addition to a series of restrictions which make it difficult or impossible for Palestinian citizens to get to all parts of the city: no entry for Palestinian cars, streets where one can only walk one way, inaccessible streets. Within the city five colonies of Jews have settled, occupying the former homes of Palestinians. A detachment of 4,000 Israeli soldiers provides security cover for these 400 colonizing families.

Nablus used to be Palestine's most thriving city. Today, after a nine-year blockade, it's barely surviving. Signs of poverty and unemployment are evident, and the Israeli military presence is strong and very harsh. All residents of Nablus, without exception (including the Governor, the highest authority and representative of the Palestinian Authority) need a permit from the Israeli Ministry of Defence in order to leave the city. Most children have never crossed this line; they know no world other than the streets of their city.

In Balata refugee camp, the most crowded in all the West Bank, 25,000 people are living in an area of 1 km2.

On the outskirts of Ramallah, the political capital of the West Bank, every Friday young Palestinians congregate by the fence to throw stones at the Israeli soldiers in protest against the wall. This act has become a regular weekly occurrence which the soldiers respond to by firing smoke canisters.

At the height of the Israeli army's shelling we travelled as far as the border of the other Palestinian territory: Gaza. Here, the inhabitants experienced in an even cruder form the demolition of homes, blockades, sieges and preventive arrest. Under the pretext of the Jewish population's security, the Israeli army routinely detains people. Here's a statistic: one in four Palestinians has been detained in prison with no objective cause, only preventively.

Since the founding of the State of Israel in 1948, thousands of Palestinians have been living in exile in refugee camps distributed mainly in the bordering countries: Syria, Jordan, Lebanon... Under strict security, in Damascus we visited exiled Hamas leaders who, amongst other matters, warned of the danger of fomenting hatred amongst the younger generations.

And so here we have a documentary produced in-house by K 2000 that examines the main reasons for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, in a context where coverage of the Israeli air strike on Gaza has captured the world's attention.

LA CAJA NEGRA (THE BLACK BOX) ETB 2 brings to the screen for the first time a new and original research programme presented by Iaki Lpez and co-produced by K 2000 and SALTA TV

In a prime-time slot on Wednesday 5th March, ETB 2 is screening La Caja Negra (The Black Box) . This new programme, presented by popular Basque journalist Iaki Lpez, will be taking a fresh look at the most socially impactful events that have taken place in Euskadi over the past 30 years. The air disaster which took place on Mount Oiz; Orozko's controversial crime; the Ortuella Primary School tragedy; and the floods which hit Euskadi in the summer of 1983, are some of the events which will be researched in this novel format.

Each time we tune in, the exhaustive research done by the programme team will help us remember, through interviews with eye witnesses, the most important events of our past. Could something similar happen today? In order to answer this question, each week the programme will recover the figurative "black box" of each of the events and, with the benefit of hindsight, will look for new insights that will shed light on what happened.

La Caja negra (The Black Box), is the second joint production by K 2000 and Salta TV for ETB and will be broadcast every Sunday starting at 10 p.m. on the station's second channel.

Kalaka

Info show hosted by Xabier Euzkitze combining information and entertainment.

By means of contrasting opinions as well as the contribution from other genres - interviews, reports, analysis by experts and statements by those affected, etc. - the programme allows the viewer to approach selected topics from Basque and international current affairs, without the frenzied day-to-day pace, analyzing the true dimension of the events; their causes, context and effects.

The main feature of this format - as well as its pace, television tension and its connection to current news - is the specific weight of the viewers' opinions.
